At the Genoa Boat Show in 1970, Vitelli rented a small space. His booth caught the attention of Franz Felix, the number two at Amerglass, the most modern shipyard in Europe at that time. Felix offered Azimut the Amerglass dealership in Italy. With this, the first step had been taken in Vitelli's boat sales, not yet knowing that he would dedicate himself to the mass production of yachts.
Azimut's journey continued, and contracts were signed to represent other major shipyards in Italy. With low costs, few staff, and great efficiency, at the age of 24, Vitelli was ready to set his sights on a new goal: to start building boats. Vitelli formed a joint venture with Amerglass, which combined Dutch expertise with Italian craftsmanship, and achieved Azimut's first creation, the AZ’43 Bali. It began to be produced in series to reach more people and more countries.
In 1985, Azimut acquired Benetti. This historic brand, based in Viareggio and specializing in boat manufacturing since 1873, is the author of the megayacht concept. With the acquisition of new boats in Fano, the restructuring of the Benetti shipyards in Viareggio, and the construction of a new plant in Avigliana, in the province of Turin, Azimut became one of the leading builders of yachts and megayachts.
