Carabela III Clase IOR - Description

It is not easy today to find a classic boat from a single owner: the one who ordered it to be built on his day and who has been caring for him for all his life. The Avalot is precisely this. His landlord sought a sports and habitable design at the same time and the I.O.R. formula then provided him just what he was looking for. Sparkman & Stephens, whom he first addressed seemed overly expensive, while Don Pye, who had just separated from Kim Holman, offered him a beautiful design, for a fraction of that budget. Nick Cañeres and Pablo Medina took care of the construction and the whole structure told us about his art. The interior style of the boat, very typical of Carabela, today will seem a bit dark, but it preserves all the elegance of the first moment and surprises by the contrast with such a sporty deck, where they dominate the winches autocazantes for each maneuver. It was those times when a regatta ship did not have to be forcibly uncomfortable or spartan. Time when after winning the winter championship races one could leave the family cruise, without renouncing the comfort and luxury of a cosy and equipped interior. This lasted until the middle of the Ochenta, when the prototypes of aluminum and broken mats gave the traste with the formula. Don Pye had left his association with Kim Holman for a very short time, when the Avalot's future armor required him on the planes and their price. The agreement was easily reached and Carabela finished the construction in a year and a half, throwing the boat in Barcelona at the pier in front of the Royal Yacht Club. As we have said, the construction is typical of Nick Cañeres and Pablo Medina of the time: Laminated coffins and bass, attached under the cover by curves of plywood. Steel reinforcements in the most stressed areas and a large steel stick. Samanguila's mahogany lining is also laminated with three layers. Palo y botavara son de abeto Sitka, considera el mejor material para ello. The lead nozzle is fitted to a wooden and steel structure that supports the load. A type of construction made to last. The deck features the typical, then very innovative, spardeck tub before the entrance. This heightened the stern cabin that was once again the shipper, as it had traditionally been. The maneuver is divided between several winches and the timonel only has to think about the course. Internally, space is not missing anywhere, even for modern standards. Wide the kitchen, wide the living room and widen the table of cards. Two comfortable and well-equipped cabins for the styba and two correct sized washbasins complete a picture in which nothing is missing. Here and there is the need for some aesthetic intervention, to fix small effects of the plywood of the mamparos. Along with some easy-to-order small filters are the only defects that slightly enturb a very attractive set. The engine is in very good condition, with few hours of use, the candles too. The Avalot has all the roles to be a protagonist of the classic races in the new classic I.O.R. division. For the cruise your comfort has no limits, like the good ships of your time.
