Churro may seem a very rare name for a boat, but in the local jar of Lavagna, where the Sangermani shipyard arises, it means “couple”. And so they called the Sangermani, father and son, to the new ship they designed themselves and built in 1972 with the intention of making a small series in fiberglass, material that was already surpassing the wood in the amount of constructions. For this very reason the Churro hull was taken to one of the best fiber laminating companies of the moment, who to perfect the quality of the mould that they were to build from it, covered the hull with a thin layer of fiber, to avoid imperfections due to the porosity of the wood. Since then the Churro has maintained that layer, which we can consider original and that, well sure that it was not the first (it was already done the same in the Fifty years), nor would it be the last (many ships were built between the Setenta and Ochenta in wood, with a layer of fiber). In addition to serving as a mold for a series of fibers, the Churro was designed to pregonize the virtues of the Sangermani in the fields of regatta, carried by a family crew and the same shipyard. But the ship was sold in the finishing phase to a client who baptized it Santa Maria and that would give rise to a family of ships, all Sangermani and all with the same name, typically preceded by the numeral, until the Quinta Santa Maria, a carbon ship, in which Sangermani only occupied the interior. The Holy Mary gave the best of himself in the races to which he participated, while his fiber relatives, of which ten units were built, having the small sail, were not so successful. The lines are typical of the I.O.R. with a rombo plant, noticeable prow and stern pitches and very fine water lines, but without the tensions that will come out later, to tinge the rule. Sidely depurated lines characterized by a V shape marked in front views. The wet surface is thus reduced to the minimum expression and makes the Churro a very fast boat in all conditions. On deck we will see the typical appearance of the time, of high elongation coefficient, in which the largest is reduced and the powerful sails are those of proa and in which the maximum of a winche for each manoeuvre, something seemingly complicated, but of what was more prescinded for economic reasons than practical. Anyway the two winches of the piano are endowed with three bites each. The deck is completely clear and only marked by the elegant rangers of the bathtub. It does not have the marking peralte that will have later designs and presents some detail of great luxury, such as the deck fridge. Internally the Churro being conceived as a ship of pure race, was finished austerely, although with the typical quality of Sangermani. A comfortable stern cabin, offers the armor the comfort of a large boat. In the kitchen, although of reduced dimensions, nothing is missing. The table of cards, very important at the time, is of more than adequate dimensions. Also the lounge has a luxury and comfort point with a folding fixed table that allows the maneuvering of the candles inside. The pique de proa has been maintained as in origin, for the warehouse of candles, cabullería and other maneuvering enseres, with two folding bunks, for the longest races. In conclusion, the “Margarita islindalamar”, the current name of the Churro, which is inspired by the famous poetry of Rubén Darío to Margarita Debayle, is ready to navigate in any program that his new owner proposes, either races on the Mediterranean circuit or sea cruises ahead.
